010 Bar Academy. Zadkine’s new bartending academy for Rotterdam
For years, we have been working on innovating education programmes in Amsterdam, together with ROCvA. What started as a single initiative to educate new talent for the Denim industry with Jean School quickly grew into a wide range of new educational programmes such as House of Events, House of Hospitality, Urban Sports Trainer and more. We developed an innovation roadmap and went to Rotterdam to help Zadkine, one of the leading educational institutes in Rotterdam, to do the same.
Innovating Rotterdam’s education offer
The big question: How to develop two new educational programmes – fit for Rotterdam – and together with the industry.
We started with a broad exploration of trends and developments in the Rotterdam area to understand what opportunities would be most relevant. In co-creation with 70 teachers and managers from Zadkine, we selected two topics to explore and build into a new course: “Drinks” and “E-commerce”. Let’s dive into drinks.
The world of drinks
Drinks are hot. From cocktails, craft beers and gin&tonics to fresh juices and ginger shots… a lot is happening in the world of drinks. And funnily enough, there aren’t a lot of professional courses available to be trained in this. Courses are either super specialised – sommelier, barista – or cover the full spectrum of the restaurant; bar to kitchen. We visited various entrepreneurs in Rotterdam to understand the trends and needs with regards to bartending and decided to step in the middle and cover everything behind the bar; coffee & tea, beers, wines, cocktails/mocktails and juices. To educate the ultimate allrounder in drinks.
In a Treehouse workshop we explored the topic further and developed the first concept for the new programme, in co-creation with the team of Zadkine and a group of top experts in the field of drinks. From there, we embarked on a co-creation fast-track. A three-day pressure cooker to design the new programme in detail, ready for piloting. Day one was all about creating the structure. On day two, we invited new experts and Rotterdam-based entrepreneurs to validate our ideas and enrich them together. Day three was about dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s and – very important – validate the new programme with students from Zadkine.
Three very energetic and inspiring days finally resulted in the concept for the 010 Bar Academy.
010 Bar Academy
In February 2020 the first students will start their new adventure at the 010 Bar Academy. Together with the coolest brands, bars and restaurants they will explore the ins and outs of the bartending profession. The first year is about getting the basics right. In the second year, the expand their skill set to become the best barista’s, sommeliers and bartenders. After these two years students will receive their MBO level 3 certificate. And, if so desired, they can get their level 4 certificate in only 6 extra months.
We look forward to meeting these new talents behind the bars of the coolest places in Rotterdam… and beyond!
