How do you prepare students for a future that is still rapidly evolving? The world of VR, AR, and other immersive technologies is changing at lightning speed and expanding into sectors such as healthcare, construction, engineering, and logistics. Koning Willem I College did not want to wait and see, they wanted to lead the way.
The challenge: to develop a brand-new, cross-sector educational program that combines technology, creativity, and social relevance. As strategic lead and program architect, Fronteer was tasked with laying the foundation for Applied Immersive Experiences together with a motivated core team, a program designed to reinvent the future of immersive learning and working.
For five months, we worked intensively together: researching, designing, testing, and refining. Through weekly sessions and two large co-creation workshops, we gradually built the story, curriculum, and partner network step by step. Teachers from ICT and Creative disciplines, developers, students, and industry professionals came together in a collaborative design team.
With support from partners such as Heijmans, Jeroen Bosch Hospital, Enexis, and Breda University of Applied Sciences, the result was a program that is just as interdisciplinary as the technology itself: practical, future-focused, and above all, human-centered.
What started as a rough concept evolved into a clear and widely supported blueprint for the program’s launch in 2025.
Applied Immersive Experiences is more than just an educational program. Students not only learn how to work with emerging technologies, but are trained to become connectors: people who bring others together, inspire, and empower.
With A.I.X., Koning Willem I College positions itself as a pioneer in immersive technology within vocational education. The program builds bridges between sectors, and between education and professional practice, with Immersive Labs across the campuses serving as a tangible expression of this collaboration.
The result is a vibrant learning environment where imagination, technology, and impact come together.
