Developing an innovation strategy for elho

We helped elho to redesign their innovation process by building innovation themes and innovation funnel, and creating an innovation dashboard.
THE CHALLENGE

Chances are that you have an elho product in your garden or home. elho is a B-Corp certified family business, with a strong DNA in design and circularity. They are the European market leader in pots & accessories, following their purpose to “bring today’s nature into people’s daily lives”

elho continuously innovates and there are plenty of good ideas in the business. This poses the question: What innovations do we go for? What innovation themes do we place our focus on? And how do we translate this vision into a workable innovation process?

THE APPROACH

To help elho to streamline their innovation process, we worked on a number of things:

  • Build innovation themes: in several workshops with a multidisciplinary team of elho, we worked on setting four key themes to focus their innovations on. These included elho’s role in the category, category objectives, unique selling points and trends.
  • Build an innovation funnel: we first set out to understand the current innovation process at elho. We worked with their innovation team to create a clear funnel to help decide what ideas to move forward in the organisation.
  • Created an innovation dashboard: finally we translated the funnel into a physical dashboard: large whiteboards where innovations can be moved like magnets. This allows the elho team to see what ideas are in the pipeline and what to focus on.
THE RESULT

This project resulted in clearly defined innovation categories and elho’s role within them, a solid innovation funnel with clear stages, processes and criteria and a practical and inspiring dashboard for tracking the innovation progress.
